Augmentation Mastopexy

When You Need Both Lift and Volume

Some breasts have drooped over time but still have enough volume for these patients, a breast lift alone is the right operation. Other breasts have lost both position and volume, often after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss. In these cases, neither a lift alone nor an implant alone delivers the complete result. Augmentation mastopexy a breast lift combined with the placement of an implant addresses both concerns in a single, carefully planned operation.

Dr. Rachana Tataria performs augmentation mastopexy in Mumbai at Fortis Hospital, Mulund. With an FRCS in Plastic Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons, England, dual fellowships in oncoplastic and microvascular breast reconstruction, and 12+ years of operative experience, she has the technical depth to safely combine two complex procedures in one operation, balancing aesthetic ambition with respect for tissue safety.

Why Augmentation Mastopexy Is Considered the Most Complex Breast Cosmetic Procedure

Combining an implant with a lift requires balancing two opposing forces. The implant adds volume and stretches the breast outward. The lift tightens the skin envelope. Achieving both simultaneously without compromising blood supply to the nipple, without overstretching the closure, and without creating unnatural shape requires careful planning, experienced surgical judgement, and conservative implant sizing. This is why augmentation mastopexy is widely regarded as one of the most technically demanding cosmetic breast operations and is best performed by surgeons with strong reconstructive backgrounds.

Single-Stage Versus Two-Stage Approach

Single-Stage (Combined)

Both the lift and the implant are done in one operation. Most patients prefer this for the single recovery and lower overall cost. Best for moderate cases.

Two-Stage (Staged)

The lift is performed first, allowing tissues to heal and settle, and the implant is added 3–6 months later. Recommended in severe ptosis, after major weight loss, or when tissue quality is borderline.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Women with moderate to severe ptosis combined with deflated, post-pregnancy or post-weight-loss breasts.

Women whose breasts have lost both fullness in the upper pole and youthful position.

Non-smokers, or willing to stop smoking 6 weeks before surgery (critical for this procedure).

Realistic expectations, augmentation mastopexy delivers excellent results but has the highest revision rate of any breast cosmetic procedure (roughly 10–15% over lifetime).

Completed family, pregnancy after this procedure can compromise long-term results.

FAQs : Augmentation Mastopexy in Mumbai

Most moderate cases can safely be done in a single operation. Severe ptosis, large skin envelope, post-weight-loss patients, and borderline tissue quality are often safer in two stages. Dr. Tataria will give an honest recommendation based on your tissue.

Scars follow the lift pattern chosen (periareolar, vertical, or anchor). Adding an implant does not usually add extra scars when the implant is inserted through the lift incisions.

Because two procedures with opposing effects are combined, the long-term result is harder to predict than either procedure alone. Implant malposition, asymmetry, recurrence of droop, and scar issues are more common though most patients are still highly satisfied.

Some women can, though breastfeeding capacity is more variable than after lift alone. This is discussed during consultation, particularly for younger patients.

Smaller, conservative implants generally give safer and longer-lasting results in this combined operation. Very large implants stretch already-thinned tissues and accelerate recurrent droop.

Most patients return to desk work in 10–14 days and to full physical activity in 6–8 weeks. Final shape settles over 3–6 months.

As a primarily cosmetic procedure, augmentation mastopexy is not covered by health insurance in India.
