Liposuction (Stubborn Fat Removal) in Mumbai
Liposuction (Stubborn Fat Removal)
When Diet and Exercise Hit a Wall
Almost every person has at least one area of the body where fat simply will not respond no matter how disciplined the diet, no matter how many gym hours, no matter how much core work or cardio. For most women in Mumbai, these stubborn pockets are the lower abdomen, the flanks (love handles), the saddlebags on the outer thighs, the inner thighs, the bra-line back, the upper arms, and the under-chin area. For most men, the flanks, abdomen, and chest (often coexisting with gynecomastia). Liposuction is the precise, definitive treatment for these localised fat deposits.
Dr. Rachana Tataria offers liposuction in Mumbai at Fortis Hospital, Mulund. With FRCS Plastic Surgery (UK), MCh, and 12+ years of operative experience across India and the UK NHS, she uses advanced liposuction techniques tumescent liposuction and SAFE (Separation, Aspiration, Fat Equalisation) liposuction for a smoother, safer result with faster recovery than older techniques.
What Liposuction Is and Is Not
Liposuction is a body-sculpting procedure, not a weight-loss procedure. It is designed to:
- Remove localised fat deposits that have not responded to diet and exercise.
- Refine and sculpt specific body areas for better proportion and contour.
- Improve the body’s outline without major skin excision (when skin elasticity is good).
- Treat predominantly fatty conditions such as pseudogynecomastia, lipomas, and gynecomastia (in combination with gland excision).
Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss, does not treat obesity, and does not tighten loose skin. Patients with significant skin laxity may need a combined skin excision procedure (e.g. tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift).
Where Fat Grafting Is Used
Liposuction Techniques Used

Tumescent Liposuction
A solution of saline, local anaesthetic, and adrenaline is infiltrated into the fatty tissue before removal, reducing blood loss, providing analgesia, and softening fat for smoother extraction.

SAFE Liposuction (Separation, Aspiration, Fat Equalisation)
A three-step technique that improves smoothness, reduces contour irregularities, and supports skin retraction.

Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL)
Uses a vibrating cannula for more efficient fat removal in fibrous areas (especially male chest, and upper back).

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (VASER)
Uses ultrasound energy to emulsify fat before removal. Useful for fibrous areas and selected secondary liposuction cases.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Adults within 10–15% of ideal body weight with localised fat deposits resistant to lifestyle measures.
Patients with good skin elasticity (younger skin retracts better after liposuction).
Non-smokers, or willing to stop smoking before surgery.
Patients in good general health.
Realistic expectations, liposuction sculpts, it does not transform an overweight body into a lean one.
The Procedure
Liposuction is performed under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation based on treatment areas.
Operating time varies from short single-area procedures to longer multiple-area contouring treatments.
Tiny punctures are created in concealed locations to perform the liposuction procedure with minimal scarring.
Tumescent fluid is infiltrated and fat is carefully removed using specialised fine cannulas.
Punctures may be sutured or left to heal naturally, followed by immediate compression garment application.

FAQs : Liposuction Surgery in Mumbai
Liposuction is not a weight-loss surgery. Most patients see a modest weight change (1–3 kg). The visible benefit is in shape and contour, not the scale.
The fat cells removed by liposuction do not regenerate. However, if you gain significant weight after surgery, remaining fat cells in other areas (and to a lesser extent in the treated areas) will enlarge.
If your skin elasticity is good before surgery, skin retracts smoothly. If skin elasticity is poor (after weight loss, ageing, or pregnancy), liposuction may worsen loose skin appearance. In such cases, combined skin excision (tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift) is recommended.
Standard tumescent liposuction is the global gold standard. VASER uses ultrasound to emulsify fat before suction — useful in fibrous areas and selected secondary cases. VASER is not universally 'better'; both have indications.
Multiple areas can be treated, but total aspirate volume is limited for safety (generally under 5 litres). Very extensive liposuction is best staged across two sessions for safety.
Immediate change is masked by swelling. Visible improvement appears by week 4–6. Final result develops over 3–6 months as residual swelling resolves and skin retracts.
As a primarily cosmetic procedure, liposuction is not covered. Exceptions may apply for medically necessary indications such as gynecomastia with documented psychological distress or lipoedema.
