Breast Lift (Mastopexy) Surgery in Mumbai
When Position Matters More Than Size
A breast lift is for women who are happy with their breast volume but unhappy with where their breasts now sit. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight loss, gravity, and natural ageing all stretch the skin and supporting ligaments of the breast over time. The result is breast ‘ptosis’ (droop), where the nipple sits lower than the natural breast crease, the upper pole appears deflated, and the breast loses its youthful projection. Mastopexy lifts the breast tissue, repositions the nipple higher on the chest, and reshapes the breast envelope without adding or removing significant volume.
Dr. Rachana Tataria offers breast lift surgery in Mumbai at Fortis Hospital, Mulund. As a female plastic surgeon with FRCS qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons, England, and an oncoplastic breast surgery fellowship, she brings detailed understanding of breast anatomy and aesthetics selecting the gentlest technique that delivers the result you want, with the least possible scar.
Understanding Breast Ptosis
Breast droop is graded based on how far the nipple sits below the natural breast crease (inframammary fold):

Grade 1 (Mild Ptosis)
The nipple sits downwards at the level of the breast crease.

Grade 2 (Moderate Ptosis)
The nipple sits below the breast crease but points forward.

Grade 3 (Severe Ptosis)
The nipple sits well below the crease and points downward.

Pseudo-Ptosis
The nipple is in normal position but the breast tissue sags below it, typical after breastfeeding.
Mastopexy Techniques
Dr. Tataria selects the technique that achieves the desired lift with the smallest possible scar appropriate for each patient.
Crescent Lift
A small crescent of skin removed above the areola for very mild ptosis. Limited application.
Vertical (Lollipop) Lift
Scar around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease. Versatile technique for moderate ptosis with excellent long-term shape.
Periareolar (Benelli or Donut) Lift
A circular incision around the areola for mild ptosis, and the smallest scar.
Anchor (Wise Pattern) Lift
Scar around the areola, vertically down, and along the breast crease. Used for severe ptosis or significant skin excess (often after major weight loss).
Who Is a Good Candidate for Mastopexy?
Women with breast droop after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or natural ageing.
Generally happy with breast size but unhappy with position and shape.
Non-smoker, or willing to stop smoking before surgery.
Stable body weight.
Realistic expectations about scarring (some scarring is always present).
Mastopexy Without an Implant
A pure breast lift does not change breast volume it only lifts and reshapes what is already there. Some women feel they have enough volume but want better position. Others find that after pregnancy or weight loss, both volume and position need addressing in which case an augmentation mastopexy (lift combined with implant) may be more appropriate. This is discussed in detail during consultation, with options presented honestly based on what your tissue can deliver.
The Procedure
Breast lift surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes 2 to 3.5 hours.
Surgical markings are completed with the patient upright before the procedure begins.
Excess skin is removed while the remaining breast tissue is reshaped for improved contour.
The nipple-areola complex is repositioned higher, and the areola is often reduced in size.
Drains are not usually required, and most patients return home the same day or after one night.

FAQs : Breast Lift Surgery in Mumbai
A pure mastopexy does not significantly change volume it lifts and reshapes existing breast tissue. The breasts may appear slightly smaller because they are tighter and more elevated. If you want size change as well, augmentation mastopexy may be more appropriate.
Most breast lifts give long-lasting results of many years. Gravity, weight changes, future pregnancy, and time will eventually cause some recurrence of droop. Maintaining a stable weight and consistent bra support helps preserve results.
Many women can breastfeed after mastopexy, particularly when the lift preserves the central pedicle and milk ducts. Outcomes vary and are discussed during consultation, especially for younger patients planning pregnancy.
All breast lifts leave some scarring. Modern techniques minimise visible scarring (periareolar for mild ptosis, vertical for moderate, anchor only when needed). Scars mature significantly over 12–18 months.
There is no single best age the right time is when breast droop bothers you, you are at a stable weight, and you have completed pregnancies (ideally). Many patients are between 30 and 55 years old.
It is generally recommended to wait until after completing pregnancy and breastfeeding, because future pregnancy can stretch tissues again. Exceptions exist and are discussed individually.
Most patients retain nipple sensation. Some temporary reduction is common and usually returns over 6–12 months. Permanent reduction or loss is uncommon.
